2.6 The Beach Walk

A pleasant stroll along the shore, undertaken in the worst possible company

Introduction

The walk along the shore

The beach walk is the setting of The Walrus and the Carpenter — a long sandy promenade under a sun that has unwisely agreed to shine at night. A column of young oysters, freshly coaxed up out of their bed, trots along behind the two gentlemen, who keep the conversation gracious and the pace gentle, all the way to the rock where lunch is served. It is the most polite atrocity in either book, and the scenery is genuinely lovely.
