1.9 The Walrus and the Carpenter

A poem about two gentlemen who weep sincerely while eating their dinner companions

Introduction

The Walrus and the Carpenter walk along the beach

The Walrus and the Carpenter take a walk along the beach, persuade a row of young oysters to come along, and deliver a thoughtful little speech about shoes and ships and sealing-wax before eating every last one of them. The Walrus cries for the oysters as he eats; the Carpenter, less sentimental, just eats. Alice tries afterwards to decide which of the two she likes better, and discovers — as Tweedledee and Tweedledum seem to have known all along — that there isn’t really a good answer.
