In Wonderland, Time is a fellow you can quarrel with — and lose
The Mad Hatter explains to Alice that if she were on good terms with Time, he would do almost anything she liked with the clock — he would skip dinner straight to tea, or stretch a single hour into a whole afternoon of lessons that ended just as they began. The Hatter, alas, fell out with Time during a concert (he was murdering the music) and Time has refused to move for him ever since: it is permanently six o’clock, and so they are permanently at tea. It is the only theory of time in English literature that you can have a personal grievance with.
