The harried courtier who started the whole thing by being late

The White Rabbit is the reason Alice is in Wonderland at all — she follows him down the hole because he is muttering about being late and consulting a pocket watch, and these are the sorts of details a curious child cannot let pass. Inside Wonderland he turns out to be a minor functionary in the Queen of Hearts’ court, perpetually anxious, perpetually behind schedule, and perpetually mistaking Alice for his housemaid Mary Ann. He is the first hint that Wonderland runs on appointments no one can quite keep.
