Introduction
The Cheshire Cat is the only inhabitant of Wonderland who tells Alice the truth, which is perhaps why it frames everything as a question. When she asks which way to go, it points out that the answer depends on where she wants to get to — and when she admits she does not much care, it concludes that any road will do. It vanishes piece by piece until only the grin remains, as if even its absence has a personality.
